The new 911 Targa 4 models.
A design revelation to revel in once again.
345 hp @ 6,500 rpm
0-60 mph: 5.0 s
Top Track Speed: 177 mph
In 1965, not long after the launch of the original Porsche 911 Coupe, came an entirely new variant named Targa. With a top that was partially removable, it created a new type of driving sensation that was distinct from both typical convertibles and coupes.
And just as the 911 concept has evolved over the decades into a sports car of vastly enhanced power and performance, the Targa concept has been constantly refined to be more comfortable and convenient.
Witness the new 911 Targa 4 and new 911 Targa 4S. The Targa 4’s 3.6-liter engine delivers 345 hp at 6500 rpm and peak torque of 288 lb.-ft. at 4400 rpm. In the Targa 4S, a 3.8-liter engine increases the output figures to 385 hp at 6500 rpm and 310 lb.- ft. of torque at just 4400 rpm.
Both of these new Targa models are all-wheel-drive, using the Porsche Traction Management System (PTM) four-wheel-drive system to achieve enhanced levels of grip.
Like their 911 Carrera 4 counterparts, the new 911 Targa models feature bodywork that is 1.73 inches wider in the rear to accommodate the wider rear track and wider tires. The result is more than just aesthetically pleasing. It serves to plant the Targa’s power to the pavement with stirring authority, especially when cornering.
The sensation of width is accentuated by the Targa’s glass roof. Fully integrated into the body, it gives the impression of almost infinite width, especially as viewed from the perspective of the driver’s seat. And despite the large glass areas, the body rigidity of the Targa is extremely high.
The roof bars, with optimized structure and strength, limit torsion to a minimum on uneven road surfaces. Additional stability is provided by a cross-member integrated between the glass roof and the rear window.
A Porsche Targa has never been mistaken for anything less. This will no doubt hold true of our latest iterations of the Targa concept. A strip of anodized and polished aluminum sets off the new Targa’s unique interpretation of the iconic 911 roofline. A wide light strip marks its rear profile, a view likely to be a fleeting one.
There’s never been another Porsche, and no other sports car—period—quite like a 911 Targa. The new 911 Targa 4 models are no less special, combining all-wheel-drive performance with the pleasures of an ingeniously engineered retractable glass roof.
With the roof closed, the Targa 4 nevertheless affords its occupants the visual delights of a drop-top roadster. Yet the driver and fortunate passenger can choose to remain completely sheltered from wind and weather. Should they desire to open the roof and enjoy the sublime exhilaration of open air driving, that can happen in an instant. Simply press the switch located in the center console, and the glass roof responds. Initially it lowers, then retracts into any position you wish. A wind deflector automatically extends to cut air turbulence and wind noise, helping the occupants to enjoy the enhanced traction of the Targa 4 in relative quiet.
The glass roof is made of tinted laminated safety glass. Combined with the electrically extending sunblind, it offers good protection against strong sunlight or heat loss at low external temperatures. The glass rear screen can be opened for easier loading of luggage. It is opened either from the inside or by remote control from the vehicle key. An electric closing aid ensures comfortable closing.
A complete decor strip of anodized and polished aluminum emphasizes the elegant lines of the roof. It accents a tight arc from the A-pillar back to the rear quarter windows with their characteristic pointed style, for an unmistakable silhouette. The rear section is accentuated by the striking taillight strip.
So the 911 Targa 4 models combine design and comfort with unsurpassed performance. For a unique driving experience— as they have since 1965.
